“The People of Despotiko”, a photo exhibition by Mary Chatzaki (February 11 - March 2, 2019)

“The People of Despotiko”, a photo exhibition by Mary Chatzaki

In this exhibition, Mary Chatzaki presents her photographic record of the restoration of ancient monuments on the islet of Despotiko, near Antiparos, where, as the excavations revealed, lie the ruins of a sanctuary once renowned all over Ancient Greece. The curator of the exhibition, Lousia Karapidaki notes : “Chatzaki’s photographs pay homage to the material and immaterial aspect of people’s toil. True samples of documentary photography, they seek to call the viewer’s attention to the unseen and largely unknown aspects of a painstaking, almost unimaginable, task: that of the restoration of an ancient monument.”

The opening of the exhibition includes a lecture by Yannos Kourayos, Archaeologist, Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, Ministry of Culture and Director of the excavation at Despotiko.

Following the opening at the Hellenic American Union, the exhibition will travel to the USA to be presented at the Greek Consulate in New York on October 10, 2019. The catalog complementing the two exhibitions is published by Melissa Publishing House with the support of the Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs (KIKPE).

The exhibition is organized by Hellenic American College/ Hellenic American University in cooperation with the Hellenic American Union and the International Association of Photography & Art of Antiparos.
