“The Laundry”: Group exhibition by members of the "Photography Circle" (May 16 - June 8, 2019)

“The Laundry”: Group exhibition by members of the "Photography Circle"

"Laundry has often been used in art, with the self-evident symbolism that goes along with it as a sign of orderliness and cleanliness" notes the exhibition's curator Platon Rivellis. "A laundry does not symbolize a house; it symbolizes a home. Especially for all of us who live in a sunny Mediterranean country, the image of clothes hanging on a line under the sun spawns the feeling that everything is alright and that we have nothing to fear".

The themes of collective exhibitions of the "Photography Circle" serve as an opportunity and a starting point that allows a group of photographers to showcase their interrelatedness as well as the personal proposition each is making. This proposition may be supported through the discourse among his or her photographs, which requires that two or more photos be presented per photographer. "The Laundry" exhibition is an innovative exception, as more than 100 participants present only one photo each. Laundry is in and of itself such a powerful image that it doesn’t leave much room for originality. The theme of the exhibition outweighs the photographers; hence it is important that visitors do not search for individual propositions but grasp the theme in its entirety, along with the variations that support it.

The exhibition is organized by the Hellenic American College/Hellenic American University in cooperation with the Hellenic American Union and the Photography Circle.
