Musical Break in Paros: Exhibition of paintings by Yorgos Papageorgiou (28/6 - 21/7/2018)
An exhibition of paintings by Yorgos Papageorgiou, curated by Louisa Karapidaki and featuring works which the artist created over the course of the past four years at his studio in Paros, will be held at the Kennedy Gallery of the Hellenic American Union, 22 Massalias Street, Athens from June 28 to July 21.
Curator and art historian Louisa Karapidaki notes in the preface of the exhibition’s catalog: “Yorgos Papageorgiou’s postmodern aesthetics and dynamic iconography, abstractive but not abstract, fascinates the spectators and challenges them to relish it, appropriate it and, then, explore it. The selective hierarchies of masses, the flow of shapes, the continuous alternations of color tones and the overall structure of his works exude a sense of harmony, similar to that of music, where melody is formed through pitch and tonal variations within a range of properly arranged musical notes”.
Yorgos Papageorgiou was born in Athens in 1953. He studied materials sciences in Montpellier and Paris and worked as a researcher in France. From 1986 to 2005 he worked in Brussels and studied in the Brussels’ School of Fine Arts (atelier Toma Roata). From 2005 to 2010 he lived in Beijing, then moved to Cairo for two years and currently is sharing his time between Brussels and Paros. Since 1998, he has exhibited his work individually in Athens, Paros, Brussels, Cairo, Beijing and Shanghai and has participated in many group exhibitions in the same cities.
