Alone in the woods, Gdańsk collection

An exhibition with selected graphics by Nobel Laureate writer Günter Grass will be presented for the first time in Greece as part of the Athens Print Fest/Fourth Edition–NOSTO at the Kennedy Gallery of the Hellenic American Union, 22 Massalias Street, Athens from October 18 to November 8, 2018.

Günter Grass (1927-2015) is widely known as a writer rather than a visual artist, partly due to the Nobel Prize in Literature he was awarded in 1999. Born in the Free City of Danzig (Gdańsk) and its honorary citizen since 1993, Grass became famous worldwide as the author of the Danzig Trilogy. However, what is not common knowledge is that he studied art at the universities of Düsseldorf and Berlin.

“Am I a Writer or a Draughtsman?” – he wonders in an article in the German art magazine Art published in 1980. Grass’s artistic works are inseparable from his writing. However, they are by no means simply illustrations of his literature, but rather a kind of a supplement to the literary content, a development of metaphors and notions which are described in detail in his books. The exhibition presented at the Hellenic American Union entitled “Am I a Writer or a Draughtsman? - visual and symbolic microcosm of Günter Grass”, curated by Marta Wróblewska, showcases, for the first time in Greece, the artist's graphics selected from the Gdańsk collection in cooperation with Gdańsk City Gallery – GGM.

At the opening, Marta Wróblewska, curator of the exhibition and of the Gdańsk City Gallery, will give a guided tour.

The exhibition is organized by Hellenic American College in cooperation with Hellenic American University and the Hellenic American Union as part of the Athens Print Fest/Fourth Edition–NOSTOS, under the auspices of the Embassy of Poland in Athens.
