Translation Faculty Bios
Petros Romaios
Petros Romaios is a freelance conference interpreter and translator. He holds a BA in Conference Interpreting from the Ionian University, Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (working languages English, French, Greek), a Diploma in Bilingual Translation, Institut Français, Greece and a Translation Certificate from the University of Mons Hainaut, Belgium. He holds an MAS for Interpreting Trainers from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
Since 2006 he has been teaching courses in Translation and Interpreting Theory, Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpreting and General and Specialized Translation. He is the former President and founding member of the Hellenic Association of Conference Interpreters (SYDISE), has served as accredited interpreter of the team of interpreters of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union and participated in international conferences offering interpreting services for major public and private institutions.
Maria Messini
Ms. Messini holds the Diploma in Translation of the Chartered Institute of Linguists Educational Trust. She has 30 years of experience in lifelong education, professional training and exam preparation. Ηer freelance work includes the translation of award-winning titles of contemporary British literature. Since 2000, she has been teaching translation at the Hellenic American Center for Lifelong Learning at all levels, including the exam prep course for candidates sitting the Institute of Linguists exams. She has twice won the peer-reviewed translation contest organized by the international translators’ community proz.com in the English into Greek language combination.
Effie Avgita
Effie Avgita has a BA in Greek Language (Major in Linguistics) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and an MA in Bilingual Translation (English-Greek) from the University of Westminster, London, UK. Her working languages are English, Spanish and Greek and translates technical and scientific texts. She has been working as a professional translator since 1998 and is a member of the Association of Translators-Editors-Proofreaders (SMED) and the Pan-Hellenic Association of Translators (PEM).
Effie has been teaching translation in the Translation Department at the Hellenic-American Union, Thessaloniki, since 2004.
Ifigeneia Roulia
Ifigeneia Roulia has been working as a freelance translator/editor/proofreader since 2010 and as a freelance interpreter since 2013. During these years, she has co-operated with Quintiles GesmbH, Concepts Ltd, Eugenides Foundation, Hellenic American Union, A.E.K. F.C. and other companies. Moreover, she has cooperated with translation agencies both Greek, such as Erminia and Paspartu, and multinational ones, such as SDL Languages Services and Intertranslations ltd. From 1991 to 2012 she worked as an English Language teacher for Stratigakis Group, where she held the position of Director of Studies from 2000 to 2012. Since September 2017 she has been Adjunct Faculty at Hellenic American College.
Mandy Giouvanelli
Mandy Giouvanelli holds a BA in English Language and Literature (Major in Translation) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an MA in Translation from Hellenic American College (summa cum laude). She has been working as a professional translator and interpreter in Greece and New York since 2009 when she started specializing in Audiovisual Translation. Since 2010 she has been working with major localization and entertainment companies abroad and has extensive experience in translating and proofreading various programs for TV and streaming services. She has participated in conferences and given talks on the emotional impact of audiovisual translation.
