A tribute to Kostas Klavvas at Hellenic American College

Organized by Hellenic American College's Bachelor of Music (BM) Program in cooperation with Hellenic American University (Manchester, NH, USA) and the Greek Composers Union, a tribute to composer Kostas Klavvas will be held on Thursday, November 13th 2014, at 20:30, in the Auditorium of the Hellenic American Union, at 22 Massalias Street, Kolonaki.

Directed by Thodoros Antoniou, Margarita Sigeniotou (vocals) and Andreas Zafiropoulos (piano) will perform music works of the famous composer Kostas Klavvas illustrating his multifaceted personality and life's work ranging from jazz, theater and cinema music, to contemporary musical expression.

Kostas Klavvas was born in Piraeus in 1934 and died in Athens in 2012. He studied advanced music theory and piano at the National Conservatory of Athens and the Hellenic Conservatory of Music and Arts. Later, he took modern music systems' lessons alongside G.A. Papaioannou, obtaining his diploma in composition. He studied close to A. Paridis who introduced him to conducting. At the same time, he was a student at the School of Philosophy, Faculty of Philology, of the University of Athens.

In 1959, he began working on light music, a genre he was already familiar with and soon afterwards became known as composer, conductor and orchestrator leaving his mark in Greece and abroad. He has composed music for the theater and cinema, accounting for approximately 40 movies and 10 plays. For more than 3 decades he worked with the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra, as an orchestrator and director of the Contemporary Music Orchestra, formerly known as "Poikilis". He helped numerous new composers and singers by introducing and establishing the grand orchestra in the Greek discography. He was the conductor for numerous concerts of Greek and foreign orchestras, such as the Athens State Orchestra, the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Barcelona Orchestra Festival to mention a few. Mr. Klavvas served as Secretary-General in the PanHellenic Music Society and has represented Greek musicians in conferences of the International Federation of Musicians. He was also a member of the Greek Composers Union.
