Is there ever a good argument for censoring artists or for regulating the images and ideas that the public can be exposed to? Is advertising even a free expression issue or should it be held to different standards? Artists, linguists, and sociologists gather together on November 7th at Hellenic American College to attempt to provide answers to these and other questions.
Launched in 2005, Battle of Ideas is ambitious annual festival of debate on critical contemporary social issues. Each year, it brings together 400 international speakers at 80 forums in London and other European cities to exchange ideas and, in the words of the Festival, "shape the future through debate".
Speaking at the event will be:
• Ashley Frawley, author and senior Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy, Swansea University
• Manick Govinda, producer, head of the Artists' Advisory Services, Artsadmin, and Vice-chair, a-n The Artists Information Company
• Alexander Nikolaou, Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics, Hellenic American University
• Penelope Petsinil, Lecturer in Art and the Theory of Photography, Athens School of Fine Art
The discussion will be moderated by Nikos Sotirakopoulos, author and Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Loughborough.
The event is being organized by the Hellenic American College (HAEC) in cooperation with the Hellenic American Union and the Institute of Ideas, on Monday, November 7th, at 19:30, in the Rooftop of Hellenic American Union (8th Floor), at 22 Massalias Street, Athens.
The lecture will be delivered in English.
