Organized by the Linguistics Department of Hellenic American College in cooperation with Hellenic American University (Manchester, NH, USA) distinguished Professor Jan Blommaert gave a lecture entitled “The Narrative of Crisis”.
Professor Blommaert wrote: “The Euro-crisis, which has hit Greece particularly badly, has been accompanied by a set of new standard discourses about the nature, origins and solutions of that crisis. These discourses - to which we are by now entirely accustomed - represent important breaks with previous cycles of hegemonic discourse on the economy, politics and society, and they raise several crucial questions about power and its abuses in the present world. In this lecture, the main characteristics of the new discourses will be sketched and the consequences for our political and social imagination - and range of action as citizens - will be discussed”.
Professor Blommaert is Distinguished Professor of Linguistic Anthropology at Tilburg University and Visiting Professor for the Ph.D. program in Applied Linguistics at Hellenic American University. His research interests include linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and literacy research - and is concerned with issues of language, culture and globalization.
The presentation took place on February 15th, 2014, at 7:00 pm in the 8th floor Reception Hall, at 22 Massalias street in Athens. The event was followed by a reception with cheese and wine.
