Andrew Horton, Professor of Film & Media Studies at the University of Oklahoma and an award-winning screenwriter and author, will give a talk on Spike Lee’s film Chi-Raq on Wednesday, June 1st in the Hellenic American Union Auditorium.
Directed by the African-American filmmaker Spike Lee, Chi-Raq (2015) is a modern-day adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes. Set in Chicago, the film is a satire that focuses on gang violence. Dr. Andrew Horton says, “Spike Lee has made powerful fiction and documentary films about African-American life and lives in America embracing hard truths but also lively culture and humor. But this past year, he took on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and co-wrote with Kevin Willmott a touching and hilarious film. Long live Aristophanes and strong humor with a social/political purpose even if the wars in Greece did not cease nor the killings in Chicago, but….long live humor and hope!”
The event is being organized by the Hellenic American Union and Hellenic American College (HAEC) in cooperation with Hellenic American University (Manchester, NH, USA).
The lecture will be delivered in English. Admission is free of charge.
