Roundtable: “Does Greece Belong to the West?”Does Greece really belong to the West? What does Western Europe, EU, and NATO signify? What does civil society, freedom, and respect for human values mean?

Thanos Veremis, Professor Emeritus, University of Athens and Vice-President of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), Pascalis M. Kitromilidis, Professor of Political Science at the University of Athens and Director of Center for Asia Minor Studies, and Takis Theodoropoulos, writer and journalist at Kathimerini, will attempt to provide answers to these and other questions on April 4, 2015, at 18:00, at the Hellenic American Union auditorium (Massalias 22, Kolonaki).

The event is the fourth in the series of round-table discussions called "Dialog for Development".

Mr. Leonidas-Phoebus Koskos, President of Hellenic American University will moderate the panel discussion. Mr. Athanasios Papandropoulos, Executive Director of the Greek Department of the Association of European Journalists, will make a few introductory remarks. The event is organized by Hellenic American College / Hellenic American University in cooperation with the Greek Department of the Association of European Journalists.

In the words of the organizers of the event, since the Greek War of Independence and the first constitutions, Greeks have used the cultural legacy of Ancient Greece and their relation to the West as key elements in their self-determination. Almost every pre-revolutionary constitution and post-revolutionary institution were based on Enlightenment teachings on freedom and the western-type democratic acquis established during the French Revolution. Is contemporary Greek society indeed a Western one? Does the Greek state in fact function according to such standards? The question is equally raised by the West itself not only in financial terms (Grexit) but also in cultural terms, as Samuel P. Huntington does in his work, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order.

This event, together with other similar lectures, forms part of the pre-conference events for the 1st International Conference on "Europe in Discourse: Identity, Diversity, Borders", which is being organized by Hellenic American University in cooperation with Hellenic American College on September 23rd-25th, 2016 in Athens, Greece.

The discussion will be held in Greek. The event is free of charge.
