Hellenic American College at the 17th Annual Conference of the Forum on Education Abroad

Dr. Ermioni Karachaliou, Director of Student Affairs & International Programs, and Greg Barton, Assistant Director, facilitated an online session called a “Community Connection” at the recent 17th Annual Conference of the Forum on Education Abroad.

The theme for this year’s conference, titled "Evolution and Revolution: Solutions in Action”, looked at changes that the pandemic has brought about in study abroad around the world. The session that Ermioni and Greg facilitated examined whether COVID-19 is an opportunity for a new study abroad era and included poll questions and discussion, in breakout rooms and as one large group of over fifty participants. The session also explored different approaches that academic institutions and providers are using to establish new partnerships without in-person communication. The groups also examined new methods to convince institutional communities of the benefits of the new study abroad experience. The session concluded with a discussion on the future of study abroad and ways in which virtual collaboration between international organizations can be woven into the fabric of an institution's curriculum.

The session revealed that educators and providers from around the world are willing to push the boundaries of creativity to ensure that students receive a study abroad experience that, while different, will still be life-changing.
