The Teacher Education Center offers a two-tier Advanced Diploma Program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) aligned to Levels 5 and 7 of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF).

Advanced Diploma in TESOL - Level 5 qualifications are required of entry-level professionals and signify the completion of the higher education short cycle, which is within or linked to a Bachelor’s degree. Advanced Diploma in TESOL - Level 7 qualifications are required of professionals who wish to develop a critical awareness of knowledge issues in their field and continue their studies to acquire a MA degree in TESOL or a related field.

The Advanced Diploma in TESOL is a comprehensive program which aims at educating participants in teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. The Advanced Diploma in TESOL is offered on-site in central Athens and online using specially designed materials, a cutting-edge Course Management System and live video-conferencing. Level 7 candidates are required to pass a placement test.

The Advanced Diploma in TESOL is for:

  • Adult non-native speakers of English who hold a Certificate of Proficiency in English (C2 level) or a Bachelor’s Degree from a University where the language of instruction is English
  • Native speakers of English with a Bachelor’s Degree from a University where the language of instruction is English
  • In-service teachers who would like to keep up-to-date with current developments in the field of TESOL

Objectives

Upon completion of the Advanced Diploma in TESOL - Level 5, you will be able to:

  • Explain language and language teaching-related issues concisely and clearly
  • Use a variety of library and online sources
  • Evaluate and develop teaching materials
  • Reflect critically on actual classroom teaching
  • Plan lessons thoroughly and efficiently
  • Teach in an actual language classroom

Students who complete the Advanced Diploma in TESOL - Level 7 will have developed the above knowledge, skills and competences and will also be familiar with current developments in the field of Language Acquisition and Second Language Teaching. Furthermore, they will be able to evaluate bibliography and compose discursive essays.

You are assessed throughout the program using a multifaceted assessment scheme based on:

  • Class participation
  • Reflective and Other Writing Assignments
  • Lesson Planning Assignments
  • Teaching Practice
  • Progress Tests
  • Final Exam (Level 5: Methodology & Language Awareness, Level 7: Methodology, Language Awareness & Essays)

Advanced Diploma in TESOL - Level 7 students are assessed on three discursive essays and a capstone project.
