When Law Meets Translation
Maria, a student in the University’s MA in Translation program (MAT), who is currently working on her thesis and is also a practicing lawyer, turned a training placement into a permanent freelance role as an EU texts translator with ORCO S.A., working for the company on a daily basis.
Her academic skills combined with patience paid off when she secured this opportunity in March 2025, when the training program kicked off, after having had a successful interview with the company in the 2024 Career Fair. Maria is grateful for this experience, describing it as offering “excellent structure, clarity, and practical relevance.” She notes that it helped her gain a deep familiarity with EU terminology. She also admits that the demanding workload pushed her to grow, enhancing her efficiency, precision, and readiness to tackle translation challenges.
She highlights that the MAT program was pivotal in connecting her legal expertise with translation practice through a carefully structured curriculum that combines theory with hands-on application. “The program equipped me with advanced proficiency in CAT tools and exposure to a wide range of translation techniques,” she says, emphasizing that this preparation gave her the confidence, precision, and skills to excel in EU legal translation. She adds: “By the time I began working as a translator, I was already familiar with professional practices in the field.”
Maria praises the 2024 Career Fair as “excellent, well-organized, and to the point.” She underscores its value in connecting with companies and exploring career opportunities, describing it as a time-efficient and highly valuable event. She also credits the Career Development Office for supporting her in preparing her CV and guiding her through EU internship applications. She says: “This preparation was instrumental in securing my current role.”
Based in Chios, Maria holds a Law degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MSc in Shipping, Trade and Transport from the University of the Aegean. She also teaches Maritime Law at Cosmos Nautical Training Center.
